Canal Company, sustainable for over many years!
Ever since Canal Company started its operations back in 1984, it has always carried out a sustainability policy in order to limit the burden on the environment within its operational activities. The company began as Canal Bike, hiring out pedal boats suitable for sightseeing on the canals of Amsterdam. The only emissions being drops of sweat.
In 1990 we introduced the Canal Bus, thé very-low-emission official hop on, hop off canal cruise. Our boats were the first in Europe to run on clean CNG engines. Canal Bus is an enjoyable and a green way of getting around the canals and takes you past Amsterdam’s renowned museums, shopping districts and tourist attractions.
In 2007, the introduction of Canal Hopper was a logical next step, with nine electrically driven open sloops and a hydrogen driven sloop. This is the environmentally friendly way to enjoy the Amsterdam canals in tranquillity and unique in more ways than one. It is a very comfortable open boat that holds 12 persons. It takes you to places where the regular tour boats cannot come.
In 2010 we have added another highlight to our green activities. In the heart of the city centre, at Damrak Pier 6 you will find Amsterdam ECO Tours. This is thé starting point for all zero emission cruises, bike rentals and walking tours. At the Amsterdam ECO Tours shop you can also buy organic food and tickets for the Canal Bus, pedal boats of Canal Bike and the sloops of Canal Hopper.
Next to the clean fleet, the active environmental policy of Canal Company states that environmentally friendly cleaning materials are used, waste is being disposed and recycled and paper use is being reduced. In addition, Canal Company prefers to cooperate as much as possible with sustainable and environmentally aware external parties, caterers and suppliers.
On February 19th 2012, Canal Company was awarded with the Green Key, Gold classification. This makes Canal Company the first passenger canal cruise company in the world to receive this official and international eco-label for sustainable and Corporate Social Responsibility.
